Günter Nooke was born on January 21, 1959 in the city of Forst in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany). From 1975 to 1978 Mr. Nooke served as a construction apprentice, earning a Diploma, gaining entrance to university. From 1978 to 1980 he served in the East German military. In 1980 he went on to study physics in Leipzig, graduating in 1985. Upon graduating he served as a research assistant, becoming a department head at the industrial hygiene inspectorate in Cottbus. In 1990 he completed postgraduate studies in physics, specializing in medicine. From 1995 to 1998 Mr. Nooke served as head of the auditing department in the office of the Control and Budget Committee for the clean-up of lignite mines. From 1987 to 1990 he was a member of a Christian opposition group in Forst. In 1990 he became a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR for Alliance 90. From 1990 to 1994 he served as a member of the State Parliament of Brandenburg and chairman of the parliamentary group of Alliance 90, later called ALLIANCE. In 1996 Mr. Nooke joined the CDU as a member of the Berlin Mitte county association. Mr. Nooke has been a member of the Bundestag since 1998. From February 2000 to October 2002 he has served as deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag. Since October 2002 he has served on the Bundestag committee for culture and media. Mr. Nooke is Protestant and married with 3 children May 7 Speech by Günter Nooke to Republicans Abroad
