Quayle and von Rimscha
Speak in Berlin
>> Former VP and journalist discuss
politics past and present
BERLIN - The Berlin Capital Club hosted former US Vice President Dan Quayle and journalist/author Robert von Rimscha
on April 28 for a lively discussion of the historic and current role of American conservatism in shaping transatlantic relations. In front of a local audience of both German and US citizens, Quayle and von Rimscha spoke of the legacy of both prior and the current US Republican administrations.
The luncheon, sponsored by the Germany chapter of Republicans Abroad International (RA), is the first of a series of events planned in the lead up to the US elections in November. RA Germany will host the European Regional Conference of Republicans Abroad May 7-8, with a dinner featuring former Republican Virginia Governor James Gilmore.
"This is a way to reach out to the public in Germany and encourage greater open political dialogue and understanding between our nations." stated Germany Chairman Henry Nickel.
The gathering included both U.S. and German citizens who fielded questions regarding the policies of the current administration and the upcoming elections. Quayle, now a private citizen emphasized the historic resolve
and commitment of Republicans both to the city of Berlin and the liberation of central and eastern Europe from Soviet domination.
When asked about the upcoming election, Quayle emphasized how critical the absentee vote was to the 2000 election and strongly urged Republicans Abroad to exercise their vote once again in 2004.
Esteemed journalist and author Robert von Rimscha followed Quayle with a thoughtful analysis of European and U.S. political opinion. His discussion highlighted the differing paradigms on social and foreign policy issues emerging on different sides of the Atlantic. Rimscha drew upon much of the material contained in his recent post-9/11 book about the Bush family.
"I felt this event was extremely informative and helpful. It is important for us to understand the points of view shared by Republicans and how they relate to transatlantic relations." Stated Marianne
Flaemig-Mueller, a German citizen living in Berlin.
